In order for any of your martial arts techniques to work, you need to believe in them. Many martial artists just go through the motions. This is not enough for our techniques to be effective in reality. Each of our techniques must have a practical application, and when training in martial arts it’s important to know that you will be able to rely on, and use what you have practiced.
In order to ensure that your techniques will be effective, you must:
First: Understand the motion – it must make sense to body and mind.
Second: Understand the practical application of the technique so you can envision it.
Third: Create the confidence to be able to throw the technique without hesitation.
Fourth: Believe that the technique will have the desired effect on the target.
Fifth: Manifest this belief into a physical reality.
In order to achieve all of this you need to train with intensity and purpose. It is not enough to train for the sake of training. Intensity in training is preparation of your body to meet the challenge that lies ahead. Purpose in training creates a goal and gives you direction. To have intention and purpose in movement you must also add emotion. To believe in something and to desire something with all your heart there must be some sort of emotional attachment which can be used to help fuel your drive towards the end result.
Whether you are breaking a brick or breaking an assailants jaw, the technique must be thrown with intent. You must believe with everything that you will break the desired object, and because you have prepared physically and mentally, this belief will become a reality.
To make it work, we must believe. With the right intention behind what we believe, we make it a reality.
